Microsoft and AT&T customers affected by outages – What you should know

The networks for Microsoft Teams and Outlook as well as AT&T are functioning normally again after widespread outages on Thursday morning, both companies announced.

At 9 a.m. ET, about 4,000 outages were reported on Microsoft Teams, up from fewer than 300 an hour earlier. Downdetector also found a smaller outage on Microsoft Outlook, with reports of more than 1,000 outages at 9 a.m. ET.

According to Downdetector, AT&T landline and cellular internet outage reports also rose to over 4,000 as of 9 a.m. ET on September 12.

According to Downdetector's charts, the problem seemed to be largely resolved by 11 a.m. ET

“We experienced a brief interruption in connectivity to some Microsoft services on our network,” an AT&T spokesperson said in a statement provided to TODAY.com. “The issue has been resolved and connections are back to normal.”

The spokesman added that the company was investigating the outage and there was “no evidence of a crime.”

Microsoft said in an update to X at 10:45 a.m. ET that it had been monitoring its systems and “the impact has been resolved.”

The company had reported an issue on its Service Health Status page at 7:46 a.m. ET, indicating that “users may be unable to access one or more Microsoft 365 services.”

It's unclear if it was related to the AT&T outage, but Microsoft said the issue was due to a third-party vendor.

“We have been working with the Internet service provider (ISP) and determined that a change in their managed environment had an impact,” the statement said. “The ISP has reverted the change and we are now seeing signs of recovery. We continue to monitor network telemetry data to ensure full recovery.”

AT&T experienced a large-scale power outage in February, affecting over 60,000 customers.
