The Dodgers hit 4 home runs in the 1st inning, then they catch up and beat the Cubs 10-8. Ohtani hits a home run and steals a base

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gavin Lux scored the decisive run with two outs in the seventh inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers caught up after throwing away a 7-3 lead, beating the Chicago Cubs 10-8 on Wednesday night and avoiding a sweep of the series.

Shohei Ohtani hit his 47th home run and stole his 48th base while three other Dodgers hit first-inning home runs for the NL West leaders, whose magic number to win the division dropped to 11 after San Diego's loss at Seattle.

The Dodgers walked ten batters, including four by starter Bobby Miller.

“It was frustrating again, but it's baseball. Not everything will work at the same time,” said third baseman Max Muncy said. “We had guys up there fighting and it was nice to see that none of them gave up.”

Switch-hitter Tommy Edman hit a home run for the fourth time in 24 hours. His two-out, two-run shot against Trey Wingenter in the eighth inning extended the Dodgers' lead to 10-7. He also hit a home run from the right side in the first inning and later from the left, the first time he hit a home run from both sides in the same game.

“Tommy is out of this world these days,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

Trailing by three runs, the Cubs were dangerous in the ninth inning. Michael Kopech loaded the bases with consecutive walks for Dansby Swanson, Suzuki boss and former Dodger Cody Bellinger.

Kopech was warned for a pitch clock violation, which resulted in an automatic ball for Isaac Paredes, whose sacrifice fly cut Chicago's deficit to 10-8. Suzuki was ejected while attempting to steal third base, and former Dodger Michael Busch struck out with a swing, ending the game while Kopech made his 13th save.

Alex Vesia (3-4) took the win with one inning as a relief pitcher.

The Cubs defeated the Dodgers 16-7, winning the first two games and winning the season series 4-2.

The Dodgers blew a lead for the second time in a row. On Tuesday they were ahead 3-1 and Lost 6:3. They eventually took a 7-3 lead after their strong first inning on Wednesday, but then had to watch as the Cubs tied it in the fifth inning.

Will Smith hit a double against Shawn Armstrong (3-3) in the seventh inning and scored on Lux's single to center, giving the Dodgers an 8-7 lead again.

Miller put the Dodgers behind 2-0 in the first, allowing two consecutive walks with two outs before Paredes and Busch scored runs.

The Dodgers responded with four home runs in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead 5-2.

Ohtani moved closer to becoming the first player in major league history to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season. He started with a 405-foot hit to center, then walked and stole second base in the second inning.

“Every night I feel like he's doing something we've never seen before,” Muncy said, pointing to the 118 mph exit velocity and 19-degree launch angle on Ohtani's home run. “I feel sorry for the fan who tried to catch him.”

With two outs, Teoscar Hernández hit a single and scored on Edman's home run into the left pavilion on the first pitch. Edman hit two home runs on two pitches against the Cubs on Tuesday.

Smith followed with a 404-footer to nearly the same spot in left. Muncy was next, sending a massive 401-footer into right field on his bobblehead night.

Bellinger hit a three-run hit in the fifth inning that chased Miller away and left Chicago behind, 7-6. The Cubs loaded the bases with two walks by Daniel Hudson and an error by second baseman Chris Taylor before Pete Crow-Armstrong's RBI single tied the score at 7-7.

Trying to secure a spot on the postseason roster, Miller allowed six runs, including his 16th home run, and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander's ERA rose to 8.17. He managed two strikeouts and four walks, including three with two outs.

“The home runs have been the most important thing in every outing,” Miller said. “I'm going through that right now, to say the least. But I have no doubt that I'm doing my best every time.”
