How Taylor Swift's endorsement affects voter registration

Taylor Swift's Instagram post expressing her support for Vice President Kamala Harris immediately after Tuesday night's debate inspired more than 405,000 visitors to visit Vote.gov.

“I'm voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a champion to represent them,” Swift said. “Remember, you must be registered to vote! In my story, I'll link where you can register and where you can find early voting dates and information.”

As of Wednesday evening, a custom URL shared by Swift in her Instagram story that expired after 24 hours had directed 405,999 visitors to vote.gov, a General Services Administration (GSA) spokesperson told USA TODAY on Thursday.

For comparison, in the week before the debate, September 3-9, 2024, vote.gov had about 30,000 visitors per day.

Swift's “Get Out the Vote” announcement at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night may also have contributed to the numbers.
