Sentencing expected for DC police officer in scooter death – NBC4 Washington

Two Washington DC police officers were convicted nearly four years ago of causing the death of a man riding a moped. The judge sentenced Officer Terrence Sutton to five and a half years in prison, and Lieutenant Andrew Zabasky must serve four years.

Officials intend to appeal the conviction and sentence.

It all started in October 2020 when Officer Terence Sutton began pursuing 20-year-old Karon Hylton-Brown.

Hylton-Brown was riding a moped when he crashed into a car and died.

Sutton was convicted of first-degree murder in 2022. Sutton and his superior, Lt. Andrew Zabavsky, were both convicted of obstruction of justice.

Surveillance and police bodycam video from Oct. 23, 2020, showed the 3.5-minute chase up and down a neighborhood street. The pursuit ended when Hylton-Brown plowed into an oncoming vehicle and was killed. His death sparked a protest that turned violent outside the Fourth Precinct police station.

Two Washington, DC, police officers have been convicted in connection with the death of a man who crashed his scooter after police chased him, News4's Mark Segraves reports.

Sutton is the first DC officer to be convicted of murder while on duty.
