SARAH SOWERS, WXII 12 NEWS. THANK YOU. VIOLENT CRIME IN WINSTON-SALEM HAS DECLINED THIS YEAR. TODAY, 35 OFFICIALS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM WINSTON-SALEM AND FORSYTH COUNTY ARE GATHERING FOR A ROUNDTABLE TO TALK ABOUT HOW THEY ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO REDUCE CRIME. MAYOR ALLEN IS INVOLVED AND U.S. MARSHAL KATRINA THOMPSON IS TALKING ABOUT SUCCESSES IN GETTING INDIVIDUALS AWAY FROM DISPUTES. THE CHIEF HAS TALKED ABOUT JUST TURNING AROUND AND WALKING AWAY TO AVOID VIOLENT CONFLICT. AND THAT COULD JUST BE IN PERSONAL ONE-ON-ONE CONTACT, ON FOOT, OR IN A VEHICLE. Mayor Allen Joines and U.S. Marshal Catrina Thompson spoke about the successes that come from individuals withdrawing from confrontations.

Thompson said, “The chief talked about turning around and just walking away to avoid violent confrontations. And that can only be done in face-to-face contact, in person, on foot or in a vehicle when it comes to aggressive driving. Walk away.”
