Traffic control leads to arrest for drug offenses after police dogs are deployed

On September 6, 2024, at approximately 10:52 p.m., officers with the Southern Shores Police Department conducted a traffic stop on US 158 at the entrance to Martin's Point because his registration was expired and a headlight was defective.

During the stop, the Southern Shores Police Department's sniffer dog was deployed and indicated the presence of an illegal controlled substance. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, cocaine was discovered and seized.

Brian Murillo, M/34, of Harbinger, NC, was arrested and charged with Aggravated possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of an open container.

Murillo was taken to the Dare County Detention Center and bail was set at $7,500.
