Granddaughter arrested for murder of elderly Fort Lauderdale couple – NBC 6 South Florida

The granddaughter of an elderly couple found brutally murdered in their Fort Lauderdale home in March has been arrested for the killings, just days after a man she was romantically involved with was charged with the murders.

Jalisa Hill, 38, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Major and Claudette Melvin, Fort Lauderdale police said Thursday.

Police believe Hill worked with 30-year-old Maurice Newson to murder her grandparents. Newson was charged with the couple's murders last month.

Family members had previously stated that Newson was dating one of the couple's granddaughters.

The man and woman, aged 89 and 85, were found shot to death in their home in the 600 block of Southwest 30th Terrace on March 22.

Her vehicle, a red 2014 Ford Fusion, was missing but was later found at a tow yard.

Newson was arrested on May 23 after he was found to have stolen the car and sold it to the towing company, police said.

“My parents were really nice to Maurice,” the couple's son, Dennis Parker, said last month. “He let Maurice in the house and fed him, and I just can't understand how the Grim Reaper – that's what he was – could come in and murder my parents.”

Police had previously stated that the couple's granddaughter told the truth when questioned in May about her involvement in the crime.

Parker had said he suspected several family members were involved.

“I believe there is something going on that is going to come to light. It's just a matter of time,” he said. “And when it happens, you're going to burn in hell. If my sister has anything to do with this, I want her charged, too.”
