Two people in custody after shooting at Mansfield hotel involving police officer, police say

Two people are in custody following a drug investigation in the parking lot of a Mansfield hotel that resulted in an officer firing shots at a suspect's vehicle, sparking a chaotic chase through several Massachusetts towns. Late Thursday afternoon, several police vehicles surrounded the Red Roof Inn hotel on Forbes Boulevard at Route 140 in Mansfield. Mansfield Police Chief Ronald Sellon said officers were called to the hotel around 3:42 p.m. because shots had been fired inside. When officers arrived, they were met by North Attleborough officers investigating a black BMW for suspected drug activity. Police said the driver attempted to flee the scene and an investigatory district officer fired a single shot at the vehicle before it sped away. The suspect fled before Mansfield police arrived, Sellon said. Video from Sky 5 shows the area cordoned off with crime scene tape and several police vehicles surrounding a vehicle with the door open. Police said the BMW was later found in North Attleborough and a suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward. The vehicle was pursued to Commonwealth Avenue in North Attleborough, where witnesses reported seeing the suspect run into a wooded area before attempting to hide behind a nearby home. Moments later, the suspect was escorted from the scene in handcuffs. Sellon said no police officers were struck by gunfire. Two officers suffered minor injuries from broken glass and a brief altercation, but no serious injuries were reported, police said. The hotel remained open and guests were inside the hotel. Despite the ongoing investigation, some guests at the hotel said they were unaware of the incident. Police said the Bristol County District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident. No further details about the suspects or their possible charges have been released. Police said there was no danger to the public.
