16-year-old dies in car accident with horse-drawn carriage, police say

RIPLEY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) – A 16-year-old driving a horse-drawn carriage died in an accident in Ohio on Tuesday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the accident occurred shortly before 7:15 p.m. near Ripley Township in Huron County.

Police said a 43-year-old driving a 2015 Chevy 2500 and the 16-year-old driving the horse-drawn carriage were both traveling west on Baseline Road.

According to reports, the 43-year-old had not kept a safe distance from the buggy and had driven into the rear of the buggy, causing it to veer off the right side of the road.

The buggy driver, Barbara Rissler, was thrown out of the buggy along with a 21-year-old passenger. Both suffered serious injuries, according to the authorities.

Rescue workers took the two to nearby hospitals. Rissler succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, officials said.

The 43-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and suffered no injuries.
