One dead and one injured in Thursday morning accident near Maverick Elementary School

Police are searching for a medium-sized, light-colored SUV that fled the area.

SAN ANTONIO – A man who lives south of Maverick Elementary School said he was outside with his dogs when he heard a bang and then a woman screaming.

It was just after 7 a.m. on Thursday. When emergency responders arrived at the scene of the accident on Babcock Road south of St. Cloud, they knew immediately that they could not save the woman. According to police, she had been hit by a truck while crossing the road in the early morning darkness.

Police said the woman, who first responders believe was in her 40s, was not in the nearby crosswalk. And when the driver who struck her stopped and came to her aid, this 57-year-old man was also struck by a vehicle, authorities added.

A fire department spokesman said the man was taken to hospital with possibly life-threatening injuries.

Police said both victims were struck by a mid-sized, light-colored SUV traveling southeast on Babcock Road. After the crash, the driver of the SUV did not stop to render aid and fled the scene, officials said.

The fleeing driver will face charges of causing a fatal accident, they added.

A police spokesman said anyone with information about the suspect or the suspect vehicle can call the SAPD's Traffic Investigation Unit at (210)207-7385. He noted that tips can be submitted anonymously.

Because traffic was blocked on Babcock Street as children began arriving at school, campus administration immediately sent a notification to parents to help everyone cope with the incident.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected and we have counselors today for students who may be disturbed by what they saw,” wrote school principal Leila Garza.

The letter also reminded the school community that Raleigh Place, south of campus, is a one-way street between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It also added that anyone walking to or from school should only cross the street at designated pedestrian crossings.

Several neighbors said they are always cautious when merging into traffic on Babcock Street because they have witnessed numerous accidents on this busy thoroughfare over the years.

The City of San Antonio provided the Department of Transportation (TxDOT) with accident data for the neighborhood, ranging from 2019 to the current date, showing eight incidents at the intersection closest to Thursday's fatal crash, six more one block north at the corner of Babcock and Williamsburg, and two additional accidents at the corner of Babcock and Erskine Place.

The local coroner has not released the name of the deceased woman and there was initially no current information about the condition of the injured man.
