Trial in Diego Maradona case postponed to 2025

A trial against eight healthcare workers accused of “negligent homicide” in connection with the death of Diego Maradona has been postponed from October to March, according to a court decision on Thursday.

A court in San Isidro, a city on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, has granted the request of three of the eight defendants to postpone for a second time the trial, which was originally scheduled for June 4 and was due to begin on October 1.

The trial will now begin on March 11, the court decision said.

The soccer star, who led Argentina to a second World Cup title in 1986, died of heart failure in November 2020 at the age of 60 after undergoing brain surgery a few days earlier.

Those accused in connection with the death of the former Boca Juniors and Napoli player include his neurosurgeon, psychologist, psychiatrist and nurses. They face prison sentences of between eight and 25 years.
