Connecticut man shot his ex-wife in murder-suicide in Ansonia

A man broke into his ex-wife's Ansonia home on Thursday, shot her and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

According to Ansonia police, officers responded to a report of a serious assault around 5 a.m. and were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Westfield Avenue.

Police found a man and a woman inside with gunshot wounds. The woman, 45-year-old Miguelina Lebron, was shot multiple times in the torso and taken to a nearby hospital where she died, police said.

The man, identified as 47-year-old Yanis Tavarez of Bridgeport, was shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“Although we are still involved in the investigation, all information to date indicates that the man shot the woman multiple times before shooting himself,” police said in a news release Thursday. “It appears the man forced his way into the home and confronted the woman before shooting her and then himself.”

The divorced couple had three children together, including two teenagers who were at home when the incident occurred, according to police. The teenagers were not injured.

Police do not believe there were any restraining orders between the divorced couple or any domestic disputes in the past.

“The Ansonia Police Department would like to thank the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crimes Unit, the Derby Police Department, the Seymour Police Department, the Milford Office of the Department of Children and Families, and Yale Trauma Clinical Services for their assistance during this investigation,” the police press release said.

“The Ansonia Police Department urges anyone in a relationship where domestic violence is occurring to contact local authorities,” police added. “Help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police department at 203-735-1885. Anonymous tips can also be left at Tip411.
