Xcel prepares for power outages in Colorado

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado (KKCO) – Power outages may occur due to strong winds and the threat of wildfires.

Xcel says its customers may experience power outages. These outages could affect people in the Grand Valley. Crews will be stationed in surrounding areas to quickly restore power if a power outage occurs, the company says.

Xcel is expecting strong winds from mid-morning to 6 p.m. The winds, combined with low humidity and dry vegetation, increase the risk of fire if sparks are generated on a power line.

“Due to the increased risk of wildfires, we also expect to use special settings on our equipment in the region that help reduce wildfires, called Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings,” Xcel said. So if a tree touches a power line, it will be detected.

Teams monitor areas to check for any risks power lines may pose. If power is lost to lines, teams will go into the area and check the lines before turning the power back on.

Xcel asks customers to be patient with crews who may be repairing lines.

“We want to thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we take actions to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect Colorado. We encourage our customers to make plans now to be prepared for possible power outages later this week due to this severe weather. As with all weather events, the forecast is subject to change,” Xcel said in a press release.
