Deptford residents fed up after cars crash into same house twice

Neighbors on a street in Gloucester County are fed up with what they say are cars crashing into their homes and cars.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley spoke with Deptford residents who say something needs to be done soon.

Shakirat Yusof's house was rebuilt just a year ago after an earlier impact, but it was hit again early Monday.

“It was a loud bang, the whole house shook, and unfortunately, because it happened before we knew it, someone has once again hit our house,” said Shakirat Yusof. “The front of our house was significantly damaged… It's so terrible, something that is beyond our control.”

“At 1:30 a.m. I was woken up by a loud bang and thought, 'No, this can't be happening again,'” said neighbor Wendy Fager.

In this latest impact, the rear of the neighbor's Nissan was smashed first, then the front steps and porch of the neighbor's house, and the family's two cars in the driveway were also smashed.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Gloucester County Routes 706 and 534, better known locally as Cooper Street and Good Intent Road.

“He drove across my lawn, hit my son's car, then two other cars and destroyed the front of my neighbor's house,” Fager said.

Officials from Deptford and Gloucester counties could not be reached for comment.

Long before this latest accident, homeowners have been asking local officials to take action to make the intersection safer. A letter from over two years ago, following previous accidents, asked the county to install a traffic light, flashing light or speed bump to prevent another accident.

“This is happening more and more often and I'm just afraid that one day someone will be seriously injured or die. Then the city will have to do something. I hope it doesn't come to that,” Yusof lamented.
