4 school districts in Greater KC, police monitor threatening social media posts

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Four school districts and police departments in the Kansas City area said they were aware of threatening social media posts against several schools in the districts.

The social media posts named at least four schools from the Grandview, Independence, Lee's Summit and Raytown school districts.

A spokesperson for the Lee's Summit Police Department said in an email that all four counties and police departments were aware of the posts.

The LSPD said it currently has no information to support the threat, but police and the district are “monitoring the situation and are being extra vigilant.”

In a letter to families, the Raytown School District also said it was aware of the threat.

The district stated that it considered the threat to be implausible after initial and ongoing investigations.

“Any threat of violence at schools should be taken seriously,” the district said in a statement. “We remain vigilant and are taking proactive measures by implementing school safety plans, deploying staff to assist students, and increasing police presence, including the Raytown, Kansas City and RQS campus security departments.”

The Grandview School District sent a similar message to families.

“While we do not have information to confirm the credibility of this post, we want to keep you updated and assure you that we are taking the situation seriously in close cooperation with our local police department,” the district said in a statement to families. “Out of an abundance of caution, we will not be allowing visitors into the building while law enforcement continues to investigate the matter. Additionally, there will be an additional police presence throughout our school community.”

KSHB 41 has also reached out to the Independence and Lee's Summit school districts for comment on this matter.
