Google hit by European privacy investigation over its AI system – POLITICO

The investigation comes against the backdrop of European data protection authorities cracking down on the development of artificial intelligence systems by technology companies due to data protection concerns.

The Irish authority responsible for overseeing many major technology companies that have their EU headquarters in the country last year ordered X, Meta and Google to delay their AI training and stop using some of European citizens' public data, such as posts.

Earlier this month, following a legal battle, X agreed to stop using European users' public posts that it collected without their consent. Meta announced in June that it had suspended its plan to collect European users' public posts and photos due to concerns from regulators. The company later said it would not release one of its new AI products because the bloc's regulations were “unpredictable.”

Google also had to postpone the launch of its generative AI Gemini, formerly known as Bard, last year. The Irish authority is currently reviewing Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2), a model for generating text in different languages and codes.

“We take our obligations under the GDPR seriously and will work constructively with the DPC to answer their questions,” said Alex McPhillips, a Google spokesman.
