Man in critical condition after incident in Spotsylvania in which he shot his father and himself

A 21-year-old man was in critical condition Thursday following an incident Wednesday night in Spotsylvania County in which he fired shots into his father's home and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

The father was in stable condition after the gunshot wound to his arm, said Sheriff Major Troy Skebo. He was able to call 911 after his injury.

Skebo said officers responded to the 911 call from the 3700 block of W. Glen Dower Drive at about 9:50 p.m. Police said the “estranged” son showed up at the home and fired through the front door, hitting his father in the arm.

When officers arrived, they found the suspected shooter lying in the driveway, suffering from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Both victims were transported to a nearby trauma center for treatment.

Skebo said the investigation was at an early stage and it was not yet clear what charges would be brought.
