Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke about the Week 1 police incident involving his former teammate and current Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

In case you missed it, former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was involved in a police incident before the Miami Dolphins' Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On September 11, former Chiefs teammate and quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was asked if he had had “any contact” with Hill since the “pregame arrest,” as CNN described it, and if he had any general thoughts on the matter.

“No, I mean, I had no contact with him,” Mahomes initially told reporters, before adding: “But obviously an unfortunate situation.”

“It's nice to see people shining a light on this and an investigation being conducted to make sure everything was done correctly,” the Chiefs superstar continued. “But until that investigation is complete, I'm not going to comment.”

Details of the arrest by police at Tyreek Hill in Miami

According to CNN, Hill was “handcuffed and arrested by Miami-Dade police shortly before his team's opening game. [on September 8].”

“CNN is reviewing video of the four officers responding to a traffic stop,” the news channel reported on September 9. “One of them shows the first contact, in which an officer knocks on the driver's side window of Hill's sports car after he signals the wide receiver to stop near the Dolphins' stadium. Hill rolls down the window as the officer knocks and responds, 'Hey, don't knock on my window like that.'”

Officers also asked Hill why his seatbelt was not buckled. After a brief back-and-forth that included the Dolphins wide receiver rolling his window back up, Hill was asked to exit his vehicle because his behavior was described as “uncooperative” by the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, according to CNN.

The following exchange was described by CNN as follows:

“Another officer opens Hill's car door and begins to pull him out of the car. He says, 'Get out!' to which Hill responds, 'I'm getting out.' Two officers push Hill to the ground while another officer stands by. Hill says 'I'm under arrest' several times, and the one officer who is physically restraining him says, 'If we tell you what to do, you do it. Do you understand? Do you understand? Not what you want, but what we tell you. You're a little [expletive] confused.'”

According to CNN, Hill was then handcuffed and held down by the knee of a police officer named Danny Torres. The news channel reported that he was held on the ground until it was determined that he was a professional athlete for the Dolphins, at which point he was issued “summonses” and released.

Dolphins teammates Jonnu Smith and Calais Campbell also arrived at the scene during Hill's arrest. According to AP News, Smith was threatened with a “fine for blocking the road” and Campbell was briefly handcuffed after refusing to release Hill to officers.

Tyreek Hill says he was “kind of shocked” by the incident

Speaking to Kaitlan Collins of CNN's “The Source” on September 9, Hill said he was “still a little in shock” about the incident.

“When the officer came and knocked on my window, I rolled it down, cooperated, and gave them my ID. Then I immediately rolled my window back up and then back up. Then he came back to the window and said, 'Now roll your window down, now roll your window down,' and then I rolled it down,” Hill said.

“I don't want to make a scene because if I roll down my window, people walking or driving by will realize it's me and start taking pictures,” he continued. “I didn't want to make a scene at all, I just wanted to get the ticket and then just go out and have a great Sunday.”

In a letter obtained by CNN, Hill's attorney Julius Collins also wrote, “The events of Sunday, September 8, 2024, are just a reminder of the reality of the many injustices faced by Black people and minorities at the hands of law enforcement.” He added, “We do not accuse the officer of racism in any way, but we do accuse law enforcement customs and practices from a historical perspective of being discriminatory and oppressive toward Black people and minorities.”

With that in mind, Hill told Kaitlan Collins, “The reality is… if I wasn't Tyreek Hill, the worst case scenario we would have is a different article. 'Tyreek Hill was shot outside Hard Rock Stadium,' that's the worst case scenario.”

Hill and Julius Collins have since called for Torres to be fired. Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels has already launched an internal investigation.
