A former U.S. Emergency Services employee is facing charges for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in the back of an ambulance, police said.

On September 6, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office in Florida was contacted by the Daytona Beach Police Department in connection with an investigation they were conducting into 37-year-old former Flagler County Fire Department employee James Melady.

According to the sheriff's office, investigators said they found a video showing Mealdy, in uniform, harassing an unconscious 19-year-old woman.

Sheriff's detectives subsequently investigated the case and determined that emergency responders were called to the woman's home on October 17, 2021.

The woman was subsequently taken to hospital and the alleged abuse occurred in the ambulance en route.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by the Palm Beach Observer, video captured the incident and Melady setting up and moving a camera to record his actions.

Sheriff's detectives spoke with the woman, and according to the sheriff's office, she was unaware of the attack.

Authorities arrested Melady this week and charged him with sexual abuse of a helpless person and video voyeurism of a victim age 19 or older.

Melady is being held in jail without bail.

“It is unbelievable to me what this offender did to an unconscious victim in the line of duty when he was supposed to be providing emergency medical care and instead sexually assaulted her,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “I am grateful that we were able to quickly get him off the streets and into jail where he belongs. I also commend our Major Cases Unit for their tireless efforts to catch offenders like this one and for working closely with our partners at the Daytona Beach Police Department to bring this pervert to justice. It is likely that there are other victims of his disgusting behavior.”
