Valdosta State Prison inmates accused of attacking correctional officers

VALDOSTA, Georgia (WALB) – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) reports that several inmates attacked a correctional officer at the Valdosta State Prison on Wednesday afternoon, causing serious injuries.

The officer was attacked with a homemade weapon, according to GDC. They say they are still investigating what exactly happened, which perpetrators attacked the officer and what further charges they face.

The GDC issued a statement saying, in part, “GDC staff work diligently every day to ensure our commitment to safe facilities. GDC does not tolerate such activities and anyone who participates will be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

While this correctional officer is in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a Smith State Prison employee, Aureon Grace, was shot and killed by a prison inmate in June.

Although the GDC says it does not condone such activities, it was reported in July that there would be over 170 deaths in Georgia prisons by 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
