Angry New York driver who stole a tow truck with his own car in a viral video has been arrested

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a now-viral video in which an angry driver steals a tow truck, tows his pickup truck and then crashes it into several cars – while his father defended him on Friday, saying he was convinced he was being robbed.

Russel Laiosa, 55, has been charged with multiple counts in connection with the Sept. 6 mayhem in Sunset Park, including robbery, grand theft auto, reckless endangerment, hit-and-run and 11 counts of criminal damage, police said.

A wild video shows the moment the driver exploded as a tow truck driver attempted to drive off in his black Chevy Silverado on 53rd Street between First and Second Avenues.

“Dude, put my damn truck down right now! I’m warning you,” the suspect, identified as Laiosa, yells at the driver.

“I'm warning you, you motherfucker! Get the hell away from my truck!” he continues before jumping into the tow truck and speeding down the road with his truck attached.

He then crashes into several parked cars before his pickup truck tips over and falls onto the street, as the video shows.

According to police, he took a short “joy ride” to 55th Street and Third Avenue.

But Laiosa's father defended him on Friday, saying his son believed he had been the victim of a robbery.

“He said the tow truck was unmarked, the guy made threatening comments to him and he thought the guy was going to rob his car,” he told the Post.

“That's why he persisted in that situation. I'm not saying that justifies what he did, how he reacted. But the guy surprised him and actually threatened him,” he claimed.

He was arrested on Monday and, according to police, had already been arrested twice before.

Laiosa, of East Islip, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Judge Jennifer Tubridy set bail at $10,000 cash.
