Press Release: Salida Fire Department Responds to Gas Leak at Chilcott and Blake Intersection

Salida, CO – September 11, 2024 – On Wednesday at 11:38 a.m., the Salida Fire Department
(SFD) responded to a report of a gas leak at the intersection of Chilcott Street and Blake
Avenue. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a 2-inch high-pressure gas line was damaged
during ongoing construction work in the area.
SFD teams immediately assessed the situation and initiated the evacuation of a two-block radius.
a precautionary measure. Natural gas leaks pose the risk of gas leaking into nearby
Houses that can pose serious dangers. Firefighters laid out hand lines and carried out checks
of natural gas levels in surrounding residential areas to ensure public safety.
Salida Police provided traffic control in the affected area, and Chaffee
County EMS personnel were on hand to provide medical assistance if needed. Atmos Energy
was called to the scene of the accident to repair the damaged gas line.
The incident was resolved safely, with no injuries reported. The rapid and coordinated response
by all parties involved ensures the safety of the community and the successful containment of
the gas leak.
