Hugh Freeze gives a midweek update on Auburn's QB room ahead of the New Mexico game

During his press conference on Monday, Hugh Freeze said that a change at the quarterback position was possible in Week 3.

He mentioned that he had scheduled a meeting with Payton Thorne and Hank Brown to watch the tape of the Cal loss. After that meeting, Freeze said he learned “quite a lot” about both players and their way of processing things.

Thorne started for Auburn against Cal and threw four interceptions. The following week, Freeze reiterated that he was happy with the game plan and plays, but Thorne's execution on certain plays was lacking.

During the film session with both quarterbacks, Freeze said he would go through a roll of “about 15 plays that are just things we need to do right and that are usually done right in practice.”

Speaking during the SEC coaches' conference call on Wednesday, Freeze didn't reveal too much about what might happen at the quarterback position on Saturday, but stressed that he is willing to make a change if necessary.

“We have very, very limited control when we play so poorly at that position at certain moments in the game,” Freeze said.

Auburn has only practiced once since Freeze met with Thorne and Brown on Monday, so it's hard to say who might have the edge.

Freeze spoke Monday about how difficult it is for him to move on from Thorne, who has played so well in practice and fall camp but still needs to improve his in-game performance.

Brown, a redshirt freshman, was named Auburn's backup quarterback at the start of the season. His only appearance last season was in Auburn's Music City Bowl loss to Maryland, where he completed 7 of 9 passes for 132 yards.

Earlier this season, he played in Auburn's 73-3 opening win over Alabama A&M, throwing two touchdown passes on 3-of-5 passing for 96 yards.

Although there was only one practice this week, Freeze said Brown trained well.

“We're excited to see how they both respond to the repetitions given today as we continue to grade them,” Freeze said Wednesday.
