Michaela DePrince — the talented Sierra Leonean-American ballerina who captured hearts around the world — has died. She was just 29 years old. According to an Instagram post shared on her official account on Friday, September 13, Michaela's team confirmed the news of her death. The caption began, “Rest in Peace: Ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince.”

“It is with pain in our hearts that we share the loss of star ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, whose art touched countless hearts and whose spirit inspired many, leaving an indelible mark on the world of ballet and beyond,” the announcement said. “Her life was marked by grace, determination and strength. Her unwavering commitment to her art, her humanitarian efforts and her courage to overcome unimaginable challenges will inspire us forever.”

Michaela's team emphasized that the late dancer “was a beacon of hope for many and showed that regardless of the obstacles, beauty and greatness can emerge even from the darkest places.”

“Although her time with us was far too short, her genius and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were touched by her story for generations to come,” the statement said. “Love and prayers go out to her adopted family, friends and those who loved her.”

Long before she began her career, Michaela was placed in an orphanage in Sierra Leone during the civil war. During her time in the orphanage, Michaela was malnourished and abused – mainly due to the skin disease vitiligo. Throughout her dance career, the former member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem struggled with challenges in the industry. As a black ballerina, Michaela was often passed over for major dance roles, such as in The Nutcracker.
