Crime Stoppers USA members train this weekend in Indy

Starting September 13, over 200 crime fighters from over 80 different organizations are expected in the city center.

INDIANAPOLIS – “If you see something, say something,” said Dale Needleman, president of Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.

That's his message to Indiana residents ahead of the Crime Stoppers USA 2024 national training conference, which will be held in Indianapolis for the first time ever.

Starting September 13, over 200 crime fighters from over 80 different organizations are expected in the city center.

“It's an opportunity to learn best practices,” Needleman said, “to share with other organizations how they're doing things, and to learn from professional organizations about new crime waves and different things that are happening in cities across the country.”

The conference lasts four days, with presentations by national experts, including the FBI. Everything is designed to keep tips confidential and protect the public, Needleman said.

“In central Indiana, our program serves 18 counties surrounding the city of Indianapolis,” Needleman said. “Crime is very high there, and we can help smaller counties see the trend as well.”

Indiana residents can leave anonymous tips using the Crime Stoppers app, website or by calling 317-262-TIPS. Needleman said the informants are never identified.

13News also visited Crime Stoppers in Central Indiana to see how the anonymity process works.

“I want them to feel comfortable calling Crime Stoppers with an anonymous tip,” Needleman said.

In central Indiana, Needleman said, the most commonly reported crimes include child trafficking and the use of drugs far stronger than fentanyl.

“We're asking you to keep your neighborhood safe,” Needleman said. “What you see as a simple tip can make all the difference in solving crimes, and that happens literally every day.”
