Clarksville police search for man accused of fraud

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Clarksville police are searching for a man accused of defrauding a woman out of over $150,000.

The victim told investigators that she received a call in June from a person claiming to be from Amazon alleging fraudulent activity on her account. According to CPD, she also spoke with a person she believed to be her bank and the Federal Trade Commission.

According to CPD, the victim was told that “she was under investigation and needed to obtain money.” She then met a man “of Indian descent” three times at Walmart and gave him thousands of dollars.

The victim also transferred an additional $50,000 in Bitcoin on two more occasions, with all five transactions totaling $160,000.

CPD has obtained a photo of the suspect and is asking anyone with information on his identity to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 931-645-8477.

“The Clarksville Police Department would like to stress the importance of not giving out personal information over the phone unless it is a business transaction that you initiated,” CPD said. “If you are approached on the phone by someone asking you to pay money, hang up and contact local police.”
