Firefighters make progress in fighting chimney fire

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – Crews working on the Chimney Fire observed minimal fire spread Thursday due to favorable weather conditions.

The Chimney Fire has burned 6,490 acres nine miles northwest of Fairfield and was 10% contained as of Friday morning, according to Southwest Area Incident Management Team Four.

According to the team, firefighters have made progress securing firebreaks and suppressing fires on the southern edge of the fire. Crews continue to monitor containment options on the eastern and western flanks as very little fire activity is expected on Saturday.

According to the team, emergency crews are expecting gusts of 20 to 25 mph and temperatures between 58 and 67 degrees on Friday. Smoke may be visible, but air quality will improve.

The Sawtooth National Forest has also ordered the closure of hiking trails and sections of trails near the fire.

Authorities advised people not to fly drones in or around the fire area to protect firefighters.
