Michael B. Jordan directs and stars in the remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair”

EXCLUSIVE: After making his directorial debut with Creed III, Michael B. Jordan appears to have his next high-profile directing job in the bag. Sources tell Deadline that Jordan has signed on to direct Thomas Crown is an affair for Amazon MGM Studios, which will release the film exclusively in cinemas worldwide.

As previously reported, Jordan will also star in the film and produce under his Outlier Society banner alongside Elizabeth Raposo. Outlier Society has a first-look film deal and an overall TV deal with Amazon MGM.

This is the third Thomas Crown is an affair The last appearance was in 1999, when Pierce Brosnan played the rich playboy who likes to steal art in his free time, but meets an equal partner in an insurance investigator (Rene Russo) and the two quickly fall in love. The original 1968 film starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway and was directed by Norman Jewison.

While Thomas Crown doesn't feature as many physical confrontations as James Bond or Ethan Hunt, he brings the charisma the industry is always looking for to a character and gives Jordan another layered character to delve into.

Jordan and Outlier have been developing the project for some time, and after recently wrapping production on Ryan Coogler’s upcoming event film at Warner Bros., Jordan was ready to move on from the success of Creed III.

Now that Jordan has signed on to direct and star in the film, the next priority is finding a co-star to heat up the screen with. Given the impact the previous roles have had on their respective female leads, the role is sure to attract the attention of many A-list celebs in town.

The screenplay was written by Drew Pearce. An earlier draft was written by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson and is based on the original film. Plot details are being kept secret.

Jordan previously directed and starred for MGM in Creed IIIwhich opened to a franchise-record $58.6 million, the highest debut ever for a sports film. The film, which Jordan also produced through Outlier, grossed $276 million at the worldwide box office, proving that Jordan and his company are capable of delivering global hits.

The film also allowed him to show his range by delivering those haunting boxing scenes for which the Rocky franchise while adding his own touch in set pieces with an anime style he has loved since childhood. He also showed off his talent in scenes outside the ring with his actors where a punch is never thrown.
