Florida man accused of stealing Spanish treasure coins worth $53,000 – NBC 6 South Florida

A man is facing charges after authorities say he stole two Spanish gold coins valued at more than $50,000 from a Florida Keys resident.

Keiontae Raneake Osean Smith, 35, has been charged with grand theft and receiving stolen goods, Monroe County Sheriff's Office officials said Friday.

Smith, of Tampa, had agreed to pay $53,750 for the treasure coins, which were sold by a resident of Bay Point in the Lower Keys.

The two agreed to an electronic transfer in August, and when they met to make the exchange, Smith showed a photo of what appeared to be a bank transfer. However, no money was ever transferred, authorities said.

The victim learned that Smith used a false name and provided a false bank tracking number during the sales negotiations. He later also gave the victim a false credit card number, authorities said.

Warrants were later obtained for Smith's arrest and he was taken to jail. Attorney information was not available.
