Flappy Bird officially returns to Android and iOS in 2025

It has been more than 10 years since mobile games Flappy Bird went from an unknown mobile game to a viral hit and eventually an albatross for its creator Dong Nguyen. Since then, other developers looking to capitalize on the game's success have created hundreds of clones. Later that year Flappy Bird will officially return under new ownership.

We can thank the Flappy Bird Foundation, which describes itself as “a new team of passionate fans who want to share the game with the world,” for the return of Nguyen’s Flappy BirdThe Flappy Bird Foundation has the trademark rights of the official game as well as the rights to the game and the characters in Piou Piou vs Cactusthe game from 2011, which Flappy Bird is said to have been inspired by.

The new Flappy Bird will be released this fall on several yet-to-be-announced platforms, with Android and iOS versions planned for 2025. According to an earlier version of the project’s Linktree page, the new Flappy Bird will initially be playable exclusively on the messaging service Telegram, a detail that has since been removed. Polygon has reached out to the Flappy Bird Foundation for more details and will update the information once the company responds.

Unlike the original, which was a simple, straightforward game that required high scores and quick reflexes, Flappy Bird appears to be much more robust, with new game modes, character skins, progression, and multiplayer challenges. The Flappy Bird Foundation team says it will “overhaul the game's ecosystem while maintaining the familiar game design that has been popular around the world.”

“We are overjoyed Flappy Bird and offers a fresh experience that will captivate players for years to come. We have big plans for our little bird!” said Michael Roberts, the chief creative officer behind the new Flappy Birdin a press release.
