The Clemson Tigers (4-2-2) lost their first ACC game against the Virginia Tech Hokies (6-2-1) at Historic Riggs Field on Thursday.

“We had a lot of possession but weren't able to threaten the goal like we would have liked,” said head coach Eddie Radwanski. “Virginia Tech did a good job of capitalizing on mistakes and punishing us. We fought well to score a goal but were a little unlucky not to score another. The valuable lessons learned from the game will make us better.”

The first half was quiet for both teams as the game remained scoreless until halftime. It was not until Anna Weir for the Hokies scored a goal in the 63rd minute after an assist from Natalie Mitchell.

The Hokies doubled their lead in the 70th minute to make it 2-0 when Taylor Lewin scored on an assist from Taylor Price, which would ultimately prove to be the game-winning goal for Virginia Tech that secured the win.

Clemson scored shortly after in the 72nd minute on an assist from Eleanor Hays, giving Bornkamp his second goal of the season. The Tigers offense remained aggressive for the rest of the half, taking a few more shots on goal, but was unable to tie the game before the end.

Overall, the Tigers had possession of the ball for 62% of the game, while Virginia Tech only had 38%.

The Tigers will next host No. 8 Duke at historic Riggs Field on Thursday, Sept. 19. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
