CHP: Three dead in fiery car crash in Fresno County

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Three people died in a car accident in Fresno County early Friday morning.

The accident occurred shortly before 2:45 a.m. at the intersection of Kearney and Garfield.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 25-year-old Dario Urena was driving east on Kearney when he left the road.

The car then crashed into a palm tree and caught fire.

Urena, 21-year-old Syrus Suniga and 27-year-old Joey Suniga Jr. were trapped in the car.

They were all pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Officials believe alcohol may have played a role in the accident.

“It was a preventable accident in which we believe alcohol played a role,” said Mike Salas of the California Highway Patrol.

This accident brought back memories for Faith Koretoff, whose sister died on this notoriously dangerous road years ago.

She says she has been calling for change ever since.

“How many more people have to die on this corner before the intersection is stopped in both directions?” asked Koretoff.

The popular thoroughfare is often used by drivers who want to avoid Highway 180, and many significantly exceed the speed limit.

Faith says in the 50 years she has lived on this street, things have only gotten worse.

“Since we've lived here, probably three or four. Near misses every day. Two or three near misses every day. The honking, the people speeding,” Koretoff said.

Many residents of the historic boulevard believe that the long stretch needs more stop signs and more frequent enforcement.

Law enforcement tells Action News their options are limited.

“Hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles travel safely on this road every month. The drivers become a danger. That's why these accidents happen,” Salas said.
