Officer in Tyreek Hill incident has checkered past with MDPD

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida. – Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill spoke out directly earlier this week when he said he wanted to fire the Miami-Dade police officer who was seen on body-worn camera throwing him to the ground.

“He's got to go, man, because not only did he mistreat me, he disrespected my teammates,” Hill said.

The officer is Daniel Torres, who has worked for the Miami-Dade Police Department for 27 years. He is now on leave following the incident.

A video of Hill's traffic stop outside Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday was released by police a day later.

Body camera video shows Hill being stopped outside the stadium and ordered by police to roll down his window. He was then forcibly dragged from the car, taken to the ground and handcuffed.

Local 10 News obtained Torres' employee profile on Friday, which details his employment history since he started working in October 1996.

Since then, he has received 29 awards, including for devotion to duty, professionalism and service to the public.

But that file also includes complaints that included allegations of use of force — some of which were sustained, some of which were not — as well as improper conduct by an officer and improper use of the body-worn camera.

He was involved in more than a dozen use-of-force incidents and was disciplined 10 times, including a 20-day suspension in one case in 2018.

The file obtained by Local 10 News does not provide any details about the incidents that led to the disciplinary action.

The Miami-Dade Police Department's investigation into the traffic stop and Torres' actions is ongoing.

Torres' attorney said the decision to place his client on leave was premature and called for his reinstatement.
