Classic film reportedly gets sequel with original cast

A sequel to the classic adventure film “The Goonies” is reportedly in the works, and the original cast is set to return.

Released in 1985, the film is about a group of children from Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon who follow a treasure map to try to save their homes from foreclosure.

Award-winning actors such as Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan and Corey Feldman played the lead roles in the film as children.

The news was originally reported by The Sun, which said production on the film could begin next summer and it could hit theaters in 2026 or 2027.

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but now they've finally been given the green light to go ahead,” a source reportedly told The Sun. “The team are excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to new audiences.”

Some of the cast reunited virtually in Josh Gad's web series in 2020, and writer Steven Spielberg explained why there is no sequel yet.

“Every few years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn't hold water,” he said. “The problem is the bar you all set high for this genre. I don't think we've really been successful in finding an idea that's better than the Goonies we all did in the '80s.”
