Remnants of Hurricane Francine | Water leak in Memphis apartment

While attempting to remove the water, the tenant slipped, injured his back and had to stay away from work.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. – The steady drip of water into Eric Garza and his wife's home at Appletree Apartments is getting worse by the minute as the remnants of Hurricane Francine exit the Mid-South.

The couple have been there since June and when it first rained, problems began to arise.

“Supposedly they came with contractors, drywall workers and people walking on the ceilings when I told them about it. They say it's fixed, but that's not true,” Garza said.

The couple has filed work orders on the problem, but little has been accomplished. Now, in the wake of Hurricane Francine, the problem is escalating into a major crisis. It's clear the ceiling could collapse again.

“I'm sleeping on the floor in the other room. It's going to flood there soon, too. You can feel the drops in there. It's like we have nowhere to go,” Garza said.

While trying to clean the water, Garza slipped, injured his back and had to take time off work. He doesn't know who to turn to.

“[I’m] uncomfortable. Less than a man, actually,” he said. “I'm working my ass off to pay my bills and trying to have a better life. A better way to get off the streets, and it's like I can't get anything in return.”

The Appletree Apartments offices were closed on Friday because the property manager was on maternity leave.

ABC24 texted a number on the office door asking for a comment or response on the matter, but we have not received a response. If and when a response is received, this article will be updated.
