Teen found not guilty in death of DuVal High School student – ​​NBC4 Washington

After the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl near DuVal High School last year, a jury found the teenager not guilty of murder.

Abdurahman Diaby was acquitted of the murder of Jayda Medrano-Moore on Friday. The jury found Diaby guilty on all other charges, including assault, reckless endangerment and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Diaby, now 18, was 17 at the time of the fatal shooting and was tried as an adult.

Medrano-Moore was shot and killed outside her school in Lanham, Maryland, on September 11, 2023. Witnesses said she tried to defend her brother and take a gun from Diaby.

Diaby testified that the gun went off accidentally and that he acted in self-defense. As his family left the courtroom, they declined to comment.

Diaby faces up to 50 years in prison. It is unclear when the verdict will be announced.

Medrano-Moore was a smart, humble student and dedicated basketball player who dreamed of a career as a professional athlete.

Three other young people are still awaiting trial in connection with her death.
