Neighbors told CBS News Bay Area on Thursday that they heard what sounded like gunshots.

“I heard a loud bang. Since this is a common occurrence in our society, my first thought was that it was a gun. And I thought: No way, not here, probably a tire burst,” said Shawn James, who lives nearby.

On Friday, CBS News Bay Area spoke to a neighbor who said she knew the driver of the Tesla and couldn't believe her friend could have been involved.

“A very gentle, helpful guy to his neighbors. I'm shocked. I can't believe it,” said Kathy, who gave only her first name.

Kathy said he lives just half a mile from the shooting scene.

“He's a real sweetheart. And I opened my house completely to him, he took care of my cat, he watched TV with my cat and took care of her. His wife is a sweetheart, that's not possible,” she said.

The Tesla driver's family members were not home when CBS News Bay Area requested an interview. Decker's relatives said they had no comment.

Kathy, meanwhile, said that any kind of violence would not suit her neighbor.

“That tells me he must have been extremely threatened. Extremely threatened,” she said.

CBS News Bay Area reached out to the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office on Friday for comment, but has not yet received a response.
