Southampton dominated early on but missed a chance to take the lead in the 34th minute when United goalkeeper André Onana saved Cameron Archer's weak penalty, turning the game around immediately at St Mary's Stadium.

A minute later, De Ligt headed in a superb pass from Bruno Fernandes. Rashford, who had gone 13 games without a goal, ended his drought in the 45th minute with a diagonal shot from outside the box into the far corner.

In the 79th minute, the hosts were down to ten men when defender Jack Stephens was sent off for a high tackle on Garnacho.
