Kansas loses to UNLV on Friday night with 23:20

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – Kansas lost 23-20 to UNLV on Friday night at Children's Mercy Park in front of a sold-out stadium of 21,493 spectators. UNLV scored a touchdown to take the lead on fourth down with 1:51 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

After limiting UNLV to a three-and-out on the game's opening drive, Kansas took the lead at its own 19-yard line and marched 81 yards in 12 plays, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by the redshirt junior quarterback Jalon Daniels and took a 7-0 lead. Daniels accounted for 58 of the 81 yards on the drive, including 19 rushing yards and 39 passing yards, making 4 of 5 air throws. Daniels' touchdown was his first rushing touchdown of the season and the 14th of his career.

UNLV responded with a 55-yard drive that ended with a 38-yard field goal. Kansas led UNLV 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

On its next possession, Kansas took a 14-3 lead on a 33-yard touchdown run by Daniels after an option to the right side. Kansas' scoring drive was 94 yards in eight plays. Daniels converted a 3rd-and-4 to senior tight end Trevor Kardell for 18 yards in the game before his 33-yard run.

UNLV continued to score on the next drive, scoring a 27-yard field goal to make the score 14-6 in favor of KU with 6:19 minutes left before halftime.

On Kansas' first play of the ensuing drive, Daniels connected with Neal on a 33-yard pass play. Two plays later, Neal rushed 20 yards up the middle, but the drive stalled at the UNLV 28-yard line. KU senior kicker Tabor Allen would give the Jayhawks a 17-6 lead after making a 35-yard field goal with 3:17 left in the second quarter.

On Kansas' ensuing drive, UNLV intercepted a pass from Daniels and scored a touchdown two plays later as the clock expired, giving KU a 17-13 halftime lead.

UNLV cut the lead to 17-16 with a 23-yard field goal. The drive began after an interception at KU's 4-yard line. KU pushed UNLV back one yard on the drive, holding UNLV to a field goal.

UNLV controlled field position for most of the third quarter, forcing KU to its own 2-yard line with 2:06 left in the quarter. KU then embarked on a 13-play, 75-yard run that ended with a 41-yard field goal by Allen, making the score 20-16 with 11:22 left in the game. On the first third down attempt of the run, Daniels threw a 10-yard pass to redshirt junior Seville Morrison to keep the drive going. Daniels then connected with senior wide receiver Lawrence Arnold on a 29-yard reception and Neal added runs of six and nine yards.

Rebel Kylin James capped UNLV's game-winning drive with a one-yard run. On its final drive, UNLV covered 75 yards in 18 plays over 9:22.

Devin Neal was Kansas' leading offensive player with 120 yards rushing, his third consecutive game with over 100 yards rushing this season. Kansas outgained UNLV in total offense, 352-267.

The loss dropped Kansas to 1-2 on the season, while UNLV remained undefeated with a record of 3-0.
