Callum Hudson-Odoi scores the winning goal as Nottingham Forest stun Liverpool | Premier League

That day, Arne Slot discovered that the Premier League is not all fun and games, as Liverpool and their manager were outsmarted by Nuno Espírito Santo and Nottingham Forest. It was the first defeat of the Dutchman's Anfield career after Callum Hudson-Odoi beat the hosts with a trademark goal.

Everything Nuno did was down to his tactics, line-up and substitutions. His combative side followed their manager's instructions to the letter to keep Liverpool at bay for 90 minutes, conjuring up numerous counterattacks. Hudson-Odoi finally scored one to take the points after coming on as a substitute and giving Forest their first win at Anfield since 1969.

Nuno's plan was to occupy the middle of the pitch by fielding five central midfielders to neutralise Liverpool in the areas they had controlled in the first three wins. Ryan Yates was named the main nuisance as he annoyed the majority at Anfield with his aggressive play and caused numerous stoppages as Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister required treatment for war injuries.

A goal would have brought much-needed relief, but Luis Díaz hit the post, Diogo Jota sent a good chance straight to Matz Sels and Virgil van Dijk headed a corner wide. Liverpool created chances but were unable to score in the crucial moments before half-time. Trent Alexander-Arnold, however, caused Sels concern when he had to tip a corner over the bar.

With the central areas congested, Liverpool were forced to play wider and that almost led to the opening goal when Alexander-Arnold appeared on the left wing. From there, he delivered a dangerous cross that Mac Allister fired towards goal, but Sels read the situation and dove to his left to clear the ball with his palm.

Liverpool worked hard for an opener and Sels almost gifted it to them when he attempted to put an arcing ball under the bar but let it fall through his own legs. The Belgian breathed a sigh of relief as he saw the ball bounce on the line as fans waited to see if Michael Oliver's watch would vibrate before striking at the second attempt.

At Anfield, frustration was growing at their inability to get past Forest, with every misplaced pass being met with a groan. They almost paid for it when Forest countered and the ball found its way to Chris Wood, who ran through one-on-one, but Alisson was equal to his shot.

Forest brought on two wingers to provide more width, while Slot made three substitutions to inject freshness into his profligate side. The result was a more open game as Liverpool found more space to play with and Forest looked more dangerous on the counter with the pace of Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga. The latter received the final pass of a counterattack but wasted the chance, firing the ball over the goal from 13 yards, much to Nuno's chagrin on the touchline.

The Forest manager's attitude soon changed as his team quickly played the ball forward and found Elanga Hudson-Odoi on the left. The former Chelsea winger cut inside, Conor Bradley failed to block this obvious path before firing the ball past Alisson into the far corner. The visitors were euphoric as Liverpool conceded their first goal of the season.

Liverpool huffed and puffed, but its attempts to blow over the brick house in the Forest were in vain.
