Harry Kane's cup hopes could suffer a setback as he faces a forgotten Tottenham teammate who plays for a team that has never beaten Bayern Munich.

Harry Kane continues his challenge for the Bundesliga title and will next face an opponent he has probably not seen for over a decade.

Kane's Bayern Munich will be looking to continue their perfect start to the league with a trip to the far north of Germany, where they will face Holstein Kiel for only the second time in their incredibly storied history.

Kiel has achieved promotion to the top division for the first time in its history ahead of the 2024/25 season and the fans were rewarded with a visit from the record champions after just three match days.

Kiel achieved promotion thanks to a number of cult heroes, but none were as iconic as Kane's former Tottenham teammate Lewis Holtby.

The name will be familiar to many Premier League fans, as the midfielder made 38 appearances in the English premier league for Spurs and Fulham in four seasons, scoring two goals and providing five assists.

Holtby, who has an English father, moved from Schalke to Spurs in 2013 but failed to make much of an impression at White Hart Lane.

His last appearance for the Londoners was at the beginning of the 2014/15 season in a Europa League qualifier against AEL Limassol, where he played alongside Kane for the seventh and final time.

This game took place over ten years ago. Holtby was first loaned to Fulham and then to Hamburg before moving to Hamburg permanently.

In 2019, Holtby returned to England with Blackburn and spent two seasons in the Championship before moving to his current club Kiel.

The three-time German international played a key role in his club's rise to prominence, scoring numerous important goals. Kane's Bayern must now be cautious, especially given their past.

The two teams have only met once before, in the DFB Cup in 2021. The second-round match at the Holstein Stadium ended 2-2 at the end of the match before Kiel won the cup on penalties.

Bayern will be confident of taking revenge this weekend, having won two out of two games while the home team lost their opening two league games.

In one of these games against Freiburg, Kane opened his Bundesliga season account, and he managed another in the cup game against Ulm.

Kane could even break a Bundesliga record this weekend.

If he is involved in three goals against Kiel, he would reach the 50-game mark in the top German league in just 35 games.

Harry Kane's heartbreaking reaction was captured on video as the realisation hit him after Bayern Munich lost the Champions League semi-final to Real Madrid and another season without a trophy

That would be the fastest result anyone has ever achieved, including Erling Haaland, who managed it in 43 games.

This gives Kane eight chances – and it can be assumed that he will not let them go to waste.

With its results this season, FC Bayern has a lead over its probably biggest rival in the title fight, the reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso's team's 43-game unbeaten streak in the domestic league was ended by Leipzig, who turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 win at the BayArena to move level with Bayern and Heidenheim by six points.
