“Jalen Milroe is going from being a running quarterback who relies primarily on his feet to being a quarterback, a complete quarterback,” Meyer began. “Last year he was benched and then he became the SEC Championship Player of the Game. … Last year when I watched him, I thought he was Reggie Bush, Percy Harvinplays quarterback. He is without a doubt one of the top five athletes in college football. … So this week I spoke with Kalen DeBoer. He taught Michael Penix to be one of the most efficient and best passers in all of college football. We talked about the three areas Jalen needs to work on.

“First, he has to become a general on the field. That means he has to be able to control plays, not always look at the sideline. He has to control the defense. Last week it didn't look like he did that, he has to improve. Second, he has to trust the pocket. Great athletes tend to leave the pocket because that's what they've done their whole career. They feel pressure, they have to get up sometimes, take the ball and hand it off.

“… Number 3 is when you're developing a quarterback, I think the most important thing for a quarterback is to learn to go through a progression. One, two, three, sometimes four and the art of the checkdown, you've got a great athlete, give him the ball. … Check the ball down, live to see the next day, get the first down.”

As you can see, Meyer believes Milroe's athletic ability makes him a special quarterback, and the former head coach knows all about getting talent out of signal-callers who are more athlete than quarterback at the moment. Just look at his track record, which includes: Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller And JT Barrett.

Jalen Milroe has tremendous potential and has shown it at times, but he needs to improve his consistency and Urban Meyer will keep a close eye on him as Kalen DeBoer tries to get the most out of the Crimson Tide star.
