Toddler beaten, boy sexually abused in Palo Alto on Friday

PALO ALTO – A 30-year-old East Palo Alto man was arrested Friday morning on charges of beating an 11-month-old baby and sexually abusing a 7-year-old boy while their mother left them unattended in a car in downtown Palo Alto, police said.

The incident was reported around 12:45 a.m. in the 100 block of Hamilton Avenue between Alma Street and High Street, Palo Alto police said in a news release.

The mother told officers she left her children in the car while she went to a nearby store where her boyfriend was cleaning. When she returned about 10 minutes later, she found a man she did not recognize sitting in the driver's seat. He was touching his exposed genitals and pointing a knife at the 7-year-old boy, police said.

The mother ran back to the store to get help. When she returned with her boyfriend, the man got out of the car and ran away. After a short chase, the mother called the police.

An investigation revealed that the suspect sexually assaulted the 7-year-old boy and punched the 11-month-old baby in the face after lifting him from his car seat, police said.

The mother later also noticed that her boyfriend’s wallet was missing from the center console of the car.

At approximately 4 a.m., officers located the suspect near the intersection of Emerson Street and Lytton Avenue. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. He was charged with sexual battery of a minor, assault with a deadly weapon, assault with intent to commit a sexual act, and kidnapping with intent to commit a sexual act.

The eleven-month-old baby suffered minor injuries, but his mother refused further medical help, police said.
