Update on Conner Weigman's injury: Status of Texas A&M quarterback in game against Florida officially clarified

Marcel Reed will start as quarterback for Texas A&M in the match on Saturday against Florida, Michael Elko said on ABC transmitted. Conner Weigman was considered a game-time decision and will likely serve as a substitute.

Weigman appeared on Texas A&M availability report Thursday night before the game against Florida. He was then named as a game decision in the final report on Saturday morning, and Elko said the Aggies decided on Reed as the starter after warmups.

“We will go with Marcel Reed,” said Elko Katie George before kick-off. “I think Conner will be ready as a substitute in some form. We just had the feeling that Marcel was our man today when we watched before the game.”

George later provided more details about Weigman's injury early in the first quarter. He suffered a knee injury in the season opener against Notre-Dame and played last week against McNeese StateHowever, he suffered a bout of illness prior to the Florida game and was ultimately unable to play on Saturday.

“Conner Weigman is dealing with an AC sprain in his throwing shoulder,” George said. “That's an injury he sustained in Week 1 against Notre Dame. Last week he battled through against McNeese, but this week he had a setback in practice. They tried to give him an injection in the shoulder during pregame warmups just to see if he could try it out, but ultimately they decided to bench him and let Reed go.”

Reed played in three games last season under the previous coaching staff, including the bowl game against State of OklahomaHe threw for 361 yards and will now be eligible for the regular season in an important SEC game against Florida.

Elko expressed his confidence in Reed before kickoff, saying he was ready to take the reins and the next step was to go on the road and get a decisive win in the conference.

“He's going to go out there and play a great game,” Elko said of his expectations for Reed. “We have a lot of confidence in him. He's prepared for this moment. We believe he's going to go out there and lead this team.”

Texas A&M took a 3-0 lead on the opening drive after a touchdown was disallowed by a penalty. In the sequence, Red completed 5 of 7 passes for 43 yards and added a 31-yard run of his own to fuel the offense.
