City worker killed in accident in Columbia – residents share their shock

Local residents describe their emotional reactions following the tragic consequences of an accident that killed a city worker.

COLUMBIA, SC —

On Saturday, witnesses shared their thoughts and described the scene of a fatal accident that occurred a day earlier that killed a city of Columbia employee – still processing the emotional toll of witnessing such a tragic incident.

Two city vehicles were involved in an accident at the intersection of Farrow Road and Craven Street in northeast Columbia on Friday.

The aftermath of Friday's fatal crash off Farrow Road was captured on the dashboard camera of a woman who lives in the community. The video shows overturned vehicles, with at least one emitting flames and smoke.

“I immediately saw the big dump truck burning. And then I saw the one in front of it, just like those big blue trucks that pick up branches and stuff,” said Sylvia Davis, a resident of the neighborhood. “I've never seen anything like that in my entire life. It was devastating to see that, and [I] couldn’t do anything.”

Amber Emmons also saw the consequences of the accident as she drove past. Her dashboard camera recorded the scene.

“The first thing I saw, of course, was the fire, which is very widespread, and the truck overturned on its side was the second thing I saw,” Emmons said.

The scene touched Davis emotionally and remained in the memory of the people in her life.

“Life is short. Be careful in every moment and love your family and friends every day and every hour,” she said. “We just don't know.”

Columbia Police are investigating the accident. The identity of the deceased city worker has not been released.
