CSU QB mocks Travis Hunter, who responds with a Heisman-like game

FORT COLLINS – The Colorado State Rams were able to hold their own against the Colorado Buffaloes, but their play could not hold up.

Nowhere was this more evident than on a fairly meaningless play that saw CSU QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi skid before halftime. After hitting Travis Hunter on the sideline, the Rams' quarterback made a gesture that was too small toward Hunter, Colorado's Heisman Trophy-hopeful two-way star. Of course, this came after BFN had already said some not-so-nice things about the Buffs and Coach Prime in the media before the season. Hunter also has a history with the Rams, having been eliminated from last year's Showdown by an unfair hit.

Hunter, who already had eight catches at halftime when Fowler-Nicolosi taunted him, put in a strong performance in the second half.

Hunter scored a touchdown to lead the Buffaloes into the second half, extending the lead to 21-3. Later, Hunter picked off Fowler-Nicolosi and added a 40-yard return, which he finished off with a small celebration.

If that play hadn't already decided the game, a few minutes later he caught another touchdown pass deep in the corner of the end zone for his 12th catch (a record for the Rocky Mountain Showdown Buffs) and a second touchdown that gave Colorado a commanding 28-3 lead.

Hunter won the Paul Hornung Award last year as the most versatile player in the country, and even though he missed a large portion of the season due to an unfair hit in the Rams game, he still played more snaps than any other player in the country. On Saturday's CBS broadcast, they talked about Hunter as a true Heisman candidate. If he stays healthy and the Buffs continue to stay relevant, it's performances like Saturday's that will give CU's star a chance at the kind of glory that only Rashaan Salaam has brought back to Boulder. Hunter and CU begin Big 12 action at home next weekend.
