Kolkata doctor rape and murder case: The Supreme Court on Monday gave a deadline to the protesting doctors to resume their duties and asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a fresh report on the case on Tuesday, September 17. Five people have been arrested so far, including the main accused Sanjay Roy. Former hospital director Sandip Ghosh has also been arrested, along with two vendors and a security guard.

9 August

On August 9, a 31-year-old doctor-in-training was found dead half-naked on the fourth floor of the seminar hall of the government-run RG KAR Medical College and Hospital. The medical examination revealed that the victim had sustained external and internal injuries during the sexual assault and was murdered. No complaint was filed for 14 hours.

10 August

Kolkata police arrested the accused volunteer Sanjay Roy after his “lengthy investigation and admission of guilt.” At this point, doctors' protests began to break out across West Bengal and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she would demand the death penalty for the attacker.

11 August

The West Bengal government has removed RG Kar Medical College Superintendent Sanjay Vashisth over alleged lapses. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has expressed support for the protests over the case and called for a statewide strike and a halt to elective services.

12 August

The Chief Minister of West Bengal gave seven days' notice to the Kolkata school principal to take appropriate action in the case, while RG Kar school principal Sandip Ghosh resigned.

13 August

The Calcutta High Court took cognizance of the case, terming it “extremely cruel” and asked the protesting doctors to return to duty. The National Human Rights Commission also took cognizance of the case on its own initiative. The court ordered the former director of RG Kar to take extended leave and handed over the case to the CBI as no progress had been made. The CBI arrested the accused.

14 August

A 25-member CBI team was formed to investigate the case. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee announced a protest rally.

15.August

On August 15, a mob stormed the government hospital and vandalised the emergency room and nursing ward. The IMA called for a 24-hour nationwide shutdown of services on August 17.

16.August

Police arrested over 19 people for vandalism.

17.August

The National Commission for Women (NCW) alleged security lapses and tampering with evidence, while the IMA demanded the Prime Minister's intervention. The Health Ministry announced the formation of a committee to look into the security concerns of health workers and asked them to resume their duties.

18.August

The Supreme Court took cognizance of the incident on its own initiative and scheduled the matter for hearing on August 20.

19 August

Sandip Ghosh was questioned by the CBI for the fourth consecutive time. The investigating agency was given permission to conduct a lie detector test on the accused.

20.08.

A high court bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud formed a 10-member working group to formulate a national protocol to ensure safety of doctors. The top court also asked the state government and Kolkata police to submit a status report.

21 August

The central government directed the CISF to take over security at the government hospital. Meanwhile, the Kolkata police suspended three officers for vandalism.

24.August

Lie detector tests were carried out on the main defendant and six other people.

25.08.

The CBI searched the residence of former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh, former MSVP Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others.

26.August

The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj announced the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march on August 27 and demanded the resignation of the CM of West Bengal.

10 September

Protesting junior doctors reject West Bengal government’s invitation for talks.

11 September

The state government rejected the junior doctors' demands for the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and a live broadcast during the talks.

14 September

The CBI arrested former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh and a Kolkata police officer for delay in registration of FIR and lack of evidence.
