Waynesboro shooting suspect charged with first-degree murder

A grand jury this week indicted a Waynesboro man on first-degree murder charges for firing a fatal shot on James Avenue in the city in July.

According to court records, 24-year-old Jacob Preston Sipe was also indicted by the grand jury last Monday on charges including use of a firearm in the commission of a crime, enticement of a minor to commit a crime and discharge of a firearm into a building or dwelling. The first-degree murder charge was upgraded from an earlier second-degree murder charge against Sipe.

On the morning of July 23, Trevor Hill, a 33-year-old Waynesboro resident, was killed in a shooting in the 400 block of James Avenue.

Waynesboro police responded to James Avenue around 9 a.m. on July 23 after receiving reports of a gun being discharged. Sipe was arrested later that morning and taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.
