UConn police arrest Washington man for stalking and harassment – NBC Connecticut

UConn police have arrested a 40-year-old Washington state man on suspicion of stalking and harassment.

UConn police arrested him on Friday and charged him with stalking, harassment and disturbing the peace.

The investigation began in June when a UConn employee said members of his department had received several emails containing references to a specific UConn student-athlete and players in several other schools' athletic programs.

A UConn detective reviewed the emails and information about the sender and determined that the sender had no connection to UConn, according to the university.

Police have also been in contact with several law enforcement agencies in Oregon, where UConn said the man was living when he sent the messages.

According to UConn, the original content of the emails did not meet the criteria for criminal conduct.

In the weeks that followed, UConn employees, as well as dozens of other people across the U.S. with no connection to UConn, continued to receive emails that were also forwarded to police. In addition, UConn police continued to have discussions with Oregon law enforcement throughout the summer.

On August 27, Connecticut State Police notified UConn Police that the man had been taken into custody in Windsor Locks on an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Oregon that was unrelated to UConn's investigation and that he would be extradited to Oregon, UConn said.

Law enforcement authorities in Oregon then moved to dismiss charges against the man, who was released from Hartford Correctional Facility where he was being held, a UConn news release said.

The UConn arrest warrant was served and UConn police took the man into custody on Friday.

He is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Monday.
