Full video highlights of Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga fight

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez emerged victorious on September 14 when he faced Edgar Berlanga in the main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight, which took place on Mexican Independence Day weekend, saw the Mexican champion bring his unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight belts to the ring.

The 12-round world championship fight went the full distance. Canelo sent Berlanga to the mat with a powerful left hook in the third round en route to a decision win. When the blockbuster showdown came to an end, the scores were 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109, all in favor of Alvarez.

With the win, Canelo Alvarez defended his titles and improved his record to 62-2-2, 39 KOs. The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Jalisco, made his second appearance in the ring this year. His next fight is expected sometime in 2025, likely on Cinco De Mayo weekend.

“I did well,” Canelo said after the fight. “What will they say now? I'm fighting younger fighters. Before they said I'm fighting older fighters. What will they say now? They always talk.”

“I am the best fighter in the world.”

Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga, who entered the ring undefeated, fell to 22-1, 17 KOs and suffered his first loss of his career. The 27-year-old from Brooklyn, New York, was unsuccessful in his first attempt to become champion.

“I'm upset because at the end of the day I'm a winner,” Berlanga said. “I fought a legend tonight. Hopefully this day is the beginning of me becoming a future legend representing Puerto Rico.”

In the side card bout, Cuban Erislandy Lara knocked down and stopped Philadelphia's Danny Garcia in nine rounds to defend his WBA middleweight title.

Other results from Canelo vs. Berlanga included a ninth-round TKO of former Nashville champion Caleb Plant over Trevor McCumby of Yorkville, Illinois to capture the interim WBA middleweight (168 lbs) belt. Former Las Vegas champion Rolando Romero also returned to winning ways with a unanimous decision victory over Manuel Jaimes of San Jose, California.
